Albuquerque Job Corps Academic Program

New Education for the Workplace (NEWCorp) works in partnership with Del-Jen and Job Corps to provide the academic program services at the Albuquerque Job Corps Center. The NEWCorp program provides classroom-based education in critical literacy and numeracy skills.

Upon entry to the program, NEWCorp administers student assessment through the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE).  An Individualized Learning Plan constructed for each student allows staff members to focus on student strengths and individual learning styles. 

While learning at an appropriate pace, students work toward their General Equivalency Diploma (GED), career technical training and certification, and possible entry into the SIATech high school program on center. Classrooms complement the center’s career technical education so students acquire academic skills which will help them be more successful in their chosen trade.

Proven Results 

The NEWCorp Academic Program has been a successful addition to the Albuquerque Center. The Albuquerque Job Corps Center was profiled in a March 29, 2008, Albuquerque Journal article entitled "Positive Student Outcomes Bring Job Corps Ranking Up to 16th in U.S."

The article by Jeremy Hunt documents the center's improvement from a ranking of 110 out of 122 up to its current ranking of 16. Much of the transformation has been credited to Center Director Lana Kite and her emphasis on improved communication between students and staff.

The article also documents that another improvement was "when the center sub-contracted its academic operations to NEWCorp, Kite said. NEWcorp, a nonprofit, has interactive, hands-on teaching methods that are tailored to each student's needs, [center staff member Yvette] Williams said. When academics improved, the rest of the center followed, Kite said. 'It has changed the educational environment,' she said. 'That changes the whole community.'"
